Jokes are one of the best things about being a human, although I know animals tell jokes to each other too. Have you ever seen a monkey laugh? There's no way his mate didn't just do something hilarious with a banana. They give us a reason to turn on the TV, to see our friends, to go to shows, and to open Twitter. There are very few reasons to open Twitter other than jokes. Sure, you may want to keep in touch with the current discourse, but that gets bleak pretty quickly. Maybe you want to follow a currently unfolding event live (but that's partly about jokes too, otherwise you would just watch the news).
Jokes get us through hard times, and get us into good times. A good joke can completely change your perspective on a situation. Every time a car rental place refuses to honor my reservation, I don't dwell to hard on the struggle because I'm just thinking about Seinfeld!
