Even though comedy hasn't existed in its modern iteration until recently, people have been funny since the beginning of time. I'm sure somewhere along the evolutionary line, our brains figured out that it's valuable to make those in your community laugh. As the great John Waters constantly says, "If you can make someone laugh who's dead set against you, that's the first step to winning them over to your side." He couldn't be more right! If I'm a caveman who isn't great at hunting or gathering but can make everybody cackle after a long day of work, they're going to want to keep me around. We'll never know which caveman cracked the first joke or made a cave drawing of the first meme, but we can slowly freak out as we contemplate how all their jokes are now lost to time.
