It's been 3 months since the release of Dune 2, and everyone is still talking about it. It has officially entered the canon of sci-fi franchises that become monoculture. It's even making people who aren't that into science fiction buy tickets to the movies. I think something that could help explain the Dune phenomenon is this: it's a huge-scale, sky-high-budget movie with sprawling landscapes and no detail spared, but it's also a simple enough story to get in on the ground floor.
With some of the big franchises now (Ahem, like rhymes with Shmarvel), it can feel like you need to watch 6 films and read a dissertation on the multiverse before you can buy a ticket to their latest offering. Not Dune. You don't even need to have seen the first one to enjoy it. So we're continuing to celebrate the movie in the best way we know how-- with a list of memes.
