A lot of people view a woman changing her maiden name to her married name through a very patriarchal lens. The idea that a woman takes her husband's name instead of uniting with him and their children under the same name is very popular. Of course, it could be argued that if a woman really united with her husband as an equal, their last names would be hyphenated. Still, after a couple of generations of hyphenation, that's not exactly practical. IMHO, it's misogynistic to say that a woman who has had her married name for years and years has her husband's name. Whether you agree with it or not, that's her name now. Her maiden name probably came from a man, and her married name likely did as well, but that doesn't make it any less her name. That's why the demands of this woman's ex-husband's fiance are so infuriating.
